Cullom 01

Two- to four-flats form the backbone of Chicago’s naturally occurring affordable housing, those rented or sold at affordable prices without subsidies.

Curbed Chicago
”Is there hope for the disappearing Chicago two-flat?”

Details
North Center, Chicago, Illinois
3,700 sf / Renovation
Expected completion 2020

Architect Notes
Bucking the trend of converting multi-unit buildings into single-family residences, this typical Chicago “two flat” will retain both units while creating a spacious duplex for the owner & their family. The upper two floors will combined into an airy, modern living space that spills out to a sculptural rear deck. An open kitchen will be the highlight of the new ground floor as it links the linear living spaces, mirroring the owner’s daily routine. The unfinished basement will be converted into a new two-bedroom apartment with it’s own dedicated entry. The result is a new dream home for the owners and their family, while maintaining an affordable rental apartment in this increasingly expensive neighborhood.
