Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Las Catalinas is a true oasis on the Pacific coast. The Guanacaste town has fully embraced the concept of pedestrian design, with cars seldom seen in this growing hillside neighborhood. A compact urban design maintains this atmosphere - and help to preserve the surrounding dry tropical forest - but also compels the homeowner to address space-planning and privacy issues normally reserved for a location in the "big city." Cristina Gallo worked as the primary design architect with ASARQ to develop this oceanside home, which cleverly makes use of the steep change in elevation to create moments of semi-screened, outdoor privacy just steps from a popular street.
